Greetings fellow Bizarros:
The Guinness Book of World Records is full of some bizarre
record-holders. I am always surprised at the lengths some
people will go to get their name in that book. And here is
a startling…and somewhat gross example.
A Texas body modification enthusiast said he broke a Guinness
World Record by receiving 1,197 piercings in a single day.
Jeremy Stroud said Arlington body modification artist Tyson
Turk spent about five hours May 2 inserting 800 needles into
his back, 300 in his right arm, 50 in his leg and about 20
in his left arm.
He said the needles were removed at the end of the day but
they left scars all over his body.
“They’re so close together that they leave a line. It kind
of looks like I had stitches from my wrist all the way up
to my shoulder,” he said.
Stroud said two emergency medical technicians were on hand
during the record attempt as well as a witness and a photo-
grapher to support his bid to make it into the record book.
He said the original plan was 2,000 piercings, but the pain
from the needles eventually started to catch up to him.
“I made it to 1,200 and my body was getting ready to shut
down,” he said. “I had no idea what I was getting into.”

HORNCASTLE, England — A British man who admitted to biting
another man’s ear off while dressed in a chicken suit was
sentenced to 15 months in jail. James Key, 20, admitted in
Lincoln Crown Court to attacking the Benjamin Miller, 23,
after chasing him from a nightclub in Horncastle, England.
Key, who was dressed as a chicken at the time of the attack,
pleaded guilty to wounding Miller and assaulting the victim’s
girlfriend.

NEW YORK — A New York man who lived in an IKEA store for a
week says he is targeting his “irrational fear” of flying
by remaining on an airplane for a full month. Mark Malkoff,
who made headlines last year for living in one of the Swedish
home products giant’s stores for a week, said he struck a
deal with budget airline Airtran to allow him to spend a
month taking as many as 12 flights per day. “The only time
I might get off is if I have to switch planes,” he said.
Malkoff, a comedian, writer and filmmaker, said his deal
with Airtran allows him to document the experience on video.
He said his goal is to overcome an irrational fear of flying.

MEMPHIS — A Memphis woman who found a 1929 high school
class ring while raking leaves in a lot said she traced the
item back to its 97-year-old owner. Misty White said she
found the Central High School ring, which bore the initials
“AMM,” while raking a lot as part of a “Save Libertyland”
event for cleaning defunct amusement park Libertyland.
“Something made me keep raking leaves,” White said. “It was
under two years of leaves, and the ring just popped out.”
White said she found the school’s 1929 yearbook at a library
and identified the ring’s owner as Anna Maude Mahaffey. “It
gave me great pleasure to get it back,” Mahaffey White said.
“It has a sentimental value.”
